Located in West Central Illinois, Carlinville is 45 miles south of Springfield, and 65 miles northeast of St. Louis on Historic Route 66.

Founded in 1828, Carlinville enjoys the distinction of being the only town in the world with that name and the only Illinois community in Norman Crampton's book,
